The EMPOWER Research Program

I lead EMPOWER — Enhancing Medical and Psychosocial Outcomes in Women+ and parents through E-health Resources — a research program based in Halifax at IWK Health.

Most health problems are also communication problems. Whether a woman's symptoms are recognized, whether she feels able to say what she's experiencing, whether the information she finds is trustworthy, and whether she can reach the right support at the right time — these shape health outcomes as much as any treatment does. My work studies these processes and designs digital solutions that make health communication clearer, more supportive, and easier to act on, across the moments that matter most in women's and families' lives: puberty, pregnancy and the postpartum period, and midlife and menopause.

WHAT WE DO

The EMPOWER program works toward three goals:

Advance the science of women+ health by producing and sharing evidence that improves care for women+ across the lifespan.

Family in Kitchen

Understand and reduce the challenges parents face, from preconception through early childhood — including the people around them, from partners to providers.

Woman on Her Smart Phone

Co-design, evaluate, and implement digital health solutions that reach families and women+ where they are and help them act on what they learn.
